K-Gr 3-Yet another installment in the adventures of kindly Principal Tanen and his extensive neckwear collection. It's Career Day at Lynnhurst School and the students swap places with the adults. After being assigned a job, each youngster is given an appropriate tie. A surprise visit from a representative from the Education Department in Washington, D.C., who is looking to give the school a big award adds plot tension. For some reason, Mrs. Harding is not told and does not figure out that the kids and grown-ups have exchanged roles until it is almost too late. The cartoon illustrations are cheerful, with ties flowing throughout most pages to create a humorous current that moves this slight story along. Children will enjoy discovering each crazy design more than the tale itself. How can readers not smile at a tie with sports equipment, or one with telephones, push pins, paper clips, and phone messages? Although the illustrations are charming, the plot is predictable and tired.
