The first in the Witnesses of War series, this volume contains 18 stories of youth the author interviewed, all of whom grew up during World War II, many in war-torn Europe. The compilation represents tales from Australia, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Romania, USA, and Yugoslavia. Those born in Europe arrived in the United States after the war, sponsored by mostly religious groups, and later became naturalized citizens. Examples of stories include a male Belgian Resistance fighter, female French Resistance fighter, children evacuated from British cities during the Nazi blitz of bombs, a Rosie the Riveter, Australian war bride, the Army's only official pin-up girl, member of Civil Air Patrol, and more.
